Volunteer at Nature Alberta

There are many volunteer opportunities at Nature Alberta. With your support, you are helping to conserve and protect our unique wild Alberta.

Please fill out the volunteer form below and/ or give us a call. Our goal is to utilize our volunteers effectively, matching their skills with the appropriate need, and providing them with a positive experience while increasing our organization's effectiveness at conserving Alberta's natural environment. Volunteer opportunities are listed below but if you think you have a particular skill set you think we can use let us know.

 

Volunteer Opportunities at Nature Alberta:

1) Social Networking Coordinator: 
Nature Alberta is looking for a volunteer who understands the world of social networking. We need a volunteer to help manage content on our social networking tools for nature related news, issues and events. If you love Nature and Facebook this could be a perfect match for you.

2) Young Naturalist Club

Field trip coordinators are needed to help organize explorer days. Coordinators assist local expert naturalists with organizing and leading field trips. 

3) Public Outreach

Nature Alberta ambassadors are needed to attend festivals, conferences and other events. As a representative for Nature Alberta volunteers get unique opportunities to attend special events. Duties include sharing information with the public about Nature Alberta and our programs by setting up display tables, handing out brochures, and selling nature books.

4) Natural History Database:
Volunteer(s) needed to enter field observations into our database. This information, compiled with further data is used to by researchers and consultants in their work to find out more about natural history in Alberta. Most of the data which needs to be entered is from bird surveys and includes information from our citizen science programs like the Alberta Bird Atlas project, the Prairie Nest Record Scheme, Christmas Bird Counts and May Species Counts. 

5) Archivist
:
Nature Alberta/ The Federation of Alberta Naturalists has been around for FORTY YEARS. Throughout our history we have been working to help protect Alberta's Nature, and we have lots of documentation to prove this. We NEED to digitize, preserve and store this information. Volunteers are needed to scan documents and photos, and store them in our searchable database.

6) Library:
Nature Alberta has accumulated an extensive resource library of natural History books, photos, videos and reports. We are looking for a volunteer who is can help us catalog and organize our collection into a searchable library. Preference is for volunteers with library/ cataloging experience.

7) Casino:
Our next Casino will be held in the 2nd quarter of 2012. Our Casino is major fund raising event for our organization and there is a number of different volunteer positions we need to fill for this event.

8) Hypothermic Half
:
Each year, Nature Alberta joins with the Running Room in February to help coordinate the Hypothermic Half Marathon. This fundraising event is fun for runners and volunteers alike. Race volunteers take on different roles ranging from directing traffic, handing out water and generally keeping runners, safe, on track and motivated. Hot chocolate and tasty treats are provided during the race and all volunteers get a hot brunch at the Highlands Golf Course after the race!

9) Living by Water
:
A program developed to educate lake shore residents about how they can make their properties more environmentally friendly to the lake.

10) Important Bird Areas:
Caretakers watch over Important Bird Areas, call us for more information.

11) Nature Alberta Office

Volunteers needed to provide support in our mail room. Help us distribute our nature books, magazines and other information materials.

12) Field Observations
:
Submit your natural history sightings to our Natural History Database, participate in natural history counts like, May Species Counts, Christmas Bird Counts, Nest Record monitoring, Plant Watch and more.

13) Nature Champion

Nature champions area needed for environmental issues identified by Nature Alberta. Work with our issues team writing letters to government, notify the media and putting together outreach materials to inform the public.

14) Nature Alberta Magazine - Content and Submissions:
Authors and photographers are needed. Write, edit and/ or prepare articles or materials for our magazine, Nature Alberta.

15) Photography and Videos

Photos and Videos of nature are always wanted. Volunteers are encouraged to submit shots of anything nature related. Birds, mammals, fish, insects, landscapes, and/ or plants. We also love shots of people enjoying nature. This material is stored in our stock footage collection where it can be queried by the public and used in the production of communication materials for our citizen science projects, our magazine, our newsletter and other outreach media.

16) Website:
A volunteer is needed to help maintain the Nature Alberta website. Nature Alberta staff will provide input on what content add and sections that need to be updated. It is preferred if volunteers have some website experience. We are mostly looking for a volunteer who can add text and images to the site and training would be provided. Our website is using pplone open source software, with user friendly drop down menus for editing.

17) Newsletter:
We need a keen volunteer to put together a monthly electronic newsletter. This would mostly require the compilation of provided content. A format for the layout of the newsletter is already available. Finding of additional nature news or events for the newsletter would be welcome.

18) Research

Volunteers are needed for various research projects. Help us track down the information we need to carry out our conservation initiatives.

19) Fundraising

Volunteers with appropriate skills and experience can apply to assist with fundraising efforts.

20) Graphic Design:
Do you have a creative eye? Volunteers with design experience have help helped Nature Alberta develop everything from our brochures to our information display and our website, to our website. Your creative talents are appreciated.
