Alberta Liberal Caucus Response to Sale of Crown Land for Potato Farming.
Dear Mr. Penner,
Thank you for sharing your detailed letter regarding the anticipated sale of Crown Land for potato farming. It is my privilege to respond to you on behalf of Dr. Swann and the Alberta Liberal Caucus.
We have been hearing from Albertans across the province expressing concern for the endangered species habitats and water ways that may be in jeopardy if this sale goes ahead.
It is the position of the Alberta Liberal Caucus that we must approach all potential sales of Crown Land with great caution. While we recognize the need for productive agricultural land, it is our responsibility to protect endangered species and their habitat, as well as our waterways which may be threatened as a result of development. Potential sales such as this also raise concerns given once the land is sold, the government would no longer have control over its use.
This sale raises a lot of questions about what this government’s priorities really are – this land is important for a number of species, and the Regional Plan for this portion of the province has yet to be completed. How can the Government determine what is the most effective use for this land when they have yet to determine what the priorities of this region are?
We will be bringing these questions and your concerns with us in the upcoming Fall Legislative Session. Thank you again for sharing your concerns with us. Please stay in touch regarding this or anything else that is important to you.
Sincerely,
Jacqueline Brown
