Since 1984, the Beaverhill Bird Observatory (BBO) has been active in the Beaverhill Lake area monitoring bird migrations and populations. In 1987, the BBO was designated the stewards of the Beaverhill Lake Natural Area. A bird banding laboratory was built in 1986. Since then, the laboratory has been staffed every summer by students who, along with volunteers have been banding and counting birds in the natural area.
In 1970, six natural history clubs joined together to form the Federation of Alberta Naturalists. Today, this same organization, known as Nature Alberta serves a membership of over 40 clubs and represents thousands of individuals across the province. Every one of these individuals share a passion for natural history.
