Christmas Bird Count for Kids & Youth – Edmonton 2023

Sun, Dec 17 at Gold Bar Park

Nature Alberta families invite you to join us on Dec 17th from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm for our annual Christmas Bird Count for Kids and Youth!

We warmly welcome families, kids, and youth of all ages! Whether you're a seasoned birdwatcher or just starting your birding adventure, this event promises smiles, laughter, and memories to last a lifetime.
Enjoy a presentation from the Beaverhill Bird Observatory (BBO) with a very special guest, Nina, the Burrowing Owl! 🦉❄️
Then spread holiday cheer as you join a guided bird-watching walk to discover the incredible world of our feathered friends in the crisp winter air.

Nina hatched in March is fully grown, very social and enjoys company and skritches. Burrowing owls don't dig their own burrows; instead, they occupy the burrows of prairie dogs and badgers. Their populations are down by 95% because their habitat has been turned into agricultural fields and the prairie dogs that they rely on are considered pests and have been removed from the land.

We will submit our birding list to contribute to data across the province, which scientists then use to help study how bird populations are changing. Connect with other nature enthusiasts, learn about our feathered winter neighbors, and so much more at this incredible winter tradition!

Christmas Bird Count takes place outside, so dressing for the weather is a must.
