Fence Breaching Survey
The Friends of Elk Island Society are conducting a fence breaching survey at Elk Island National Park. This survey will include locating breaches, documenting information about the breach, and setting up trail cameras to observe what animals are moving in and out of the Park. We will maintain and collect camera data over the next 13 months to share with Elk Island National Park.
The Friends will be looking for volunteers to assist the Team Leaders, as the project requires a minimum of two persons working together for safety reasons. A Team Leader has been assigned to each of the four park perimeter fence stretches identified as problem locations. Each stretch has at least three breach locations. The goal is to attend each stretch of the perimeter fence once a month to maintain and collect the data from the cameras. The survey will require a group to go out every second weekend for 13 months, allowing volunteers to be engaged in citizen science.
The survey involves climbing eight-foot fences and hiking on snow/ice-covered gravel roads, trails, or both. Some breach locations may require you to hike up to 10 kilometers. We advise you to bring water and a light lunch. Weather-appropriate clothing and footwear are required. The Friends will supply all the necessary equipment for the survey.
