Water for 2050 will be a semi-virtual symposium featuring presentations from a wide array of resource experts and stakeholders concerned about future water security in the Red Deer River basin and beyond. Water for 2050 is intended for all persons, industries and organizations with an interest in water resources in the Red Deer and South Saskatchewan river basins. Stakeholders include elected and appointed officials, agricultural users, conservationists, recreational users, as well as land and resource planners.

The evening presentations will happen live and online from Wednesday, Sept 18 to Wednesday, Sept 25. In addition a World Rivers Day celebration is planned beside the Red Deer River on Sunday, Sept 22. Red Deer Polytechnic has generously offered space for live presentations as well as technical support for on-line participation.

Increasing demands on water resources and future sources such as river flows and groundwater are becoming less dependable due to climate change and other factors. As more users compete for the same resource, shortages, conflicts, environmental degradation are inevitable. The Red Deer and South Saskatchewan basins need consensus and planning for a sustainable future.

Water resources are managed and allocated by the Alberta government however provinces downstream also have rights to the flows in the south Saskatchewan River. Alberta’s Auditor General recently expressed concern about surface water management: https://www.oag.ab.ca/.../News-Release-Surface-Water...
