2022 Grouse Watch Season

Sharp-tailed Grouse by Gerald Romanchuk

Apr 15 - May 15

Bird lovers! Photographers! Intriguing, fascinating and adorable- most of the year evasive—Alberta’s Sharp-tailed grouse demonstrate a yearly, spectacular courtship dance. As winter warms into spring, grouse gather into groups on ancestral courting grounds called “leks.” Males dance to attract potential mates as did the generations before them on this same native grassland. The event is of special interest to nature lovers, outdoor educators, birders and photographers. Viewing takes place between mid-April and mid-May. The Wainwright Wildlife Society can provide you guidance and assistance to help ensure an enjoyable experience.
