ENC City Walk: 360-Degree Nature Walk

Description: 360 degrees, observing all manner of nature's biodiversity! Gravel trails with gentle grade slopes, easy walking for most.

Meeting time: 8:30 a.m.

Location: Whitemud Creek north trail, Edmonton (full washroom facility)

Meet: at the north end of Whitemud Creek trail, just off Fox Drive. Meet at the parking lot for the Alfred H Savage Centre (13909 Fox Drive)

ENC Bird Study: Least Flycatcher

The Least Flycatchers of Beaverhill Bird Observatory to Guatemala
Speaker: Geoff Holroyd, Chair, Beaverhill Bird Observatory

With Myrthe Van Brempt, Glen Hvenegaard,Jon Von Aragon, and many others.Least Flycatchers are the most frequently banded species at Beaverhill Bird Observatory, and the most common breeding bird in the forest of the Beaverhill Natural Area.  They leave to their wintering grounds in Central America to complete a wing moult. Geoff will include description of the two banding expeditions to that central American country that helped to conserve a mountain reserve.

ENC City Walk: Whitemud Ravine South

Whitemud Creek Ravine South, Edmonton, AB, Canada (map)

Description: Walk along the trails to observe whatever birds are out and about. There will be early-arriving songbirds and the creek brings waterfowl. There have been raptors like merlin, Cooper’s hawk, and sharp-shinned hawk sited. Suitable for anyone who wants to bird with others.

Facilitator: Delores Steinlicht

Duration: 2.5 hours

Difficulty: Mostly easy to medium difficulty trails. Dress for the weather.

Meet: Whitemud Ravine south—exit from Whitemud Drive on 122 St heading south and take the access road to Rainbow Valley Park. Park in the first parking lot on your left (do not cross under the freeway).

ENC City Walk: St Albert Grey Nuns White Spruce Park

Description: Grey Nuns spruce woods is a heritage stand of white spruce. It has been known for species like various woodpeckers (black-backed have been spotted there) and in spring, the possibility of warblers. It has been renovated over the past few years to have more structured trails and some boardwalks. Suitable for anyone who wants to bird with others.Facilitator: Delores Steinlicht

Duration: 2.5 hours

Difficulty: Easy walking for the most part on relatively structured trails.

Meet: the St Albert website recommends parking at the Rotary Park parking lot and then walking across the Ray Gibbon Drive bridge over the Sturgeon River. It is then a short walk to the park itself. This meeting site may change based on construction activities.
