"The Little Things That Run the World: A Survey of Arthropods in Our Grassland Ecosystem"
Speaker: Dan Johnson (Professor, University of Lethbridge, and President of the Entomological Society of Alberta)
The ecosystems of the river valley, surrounding hills, foothills, drier rangeland, and badlands of our region have a diverse community of insects, arachnids, collembolans, and crustaceans. The arachnids include many important predators and decomposers, and we have a little of everything: spiders, scorpions, pseudoscorpions, wind scorpions, mites, ticks, and harvestmen. Insects are numerous and diverse, and although sometimes annoying, are essential for a healthy ecological food web. Crustaceans are often aquatic, but some work the soil. We will learn to recognize interesting examples.
