Under Pressure: Threats to Alberta’s Native Plant Communities
When: March 12, 2024 at 12 PM
Speaker: Phillip Meintzer
You are invited to the Alberta Native Plant Council's next monthly lunchtime webinar mini-series, Under Pressure: Threats to Alberta’s Native Plant Communities.
This ANPC webinar mini-series continues as Phillip Meintzer (Conservation Specialist, Alberta Wilderness Association) takes us to the McClelland Lake Wetland Complex, an ecologically significant wetland area in northeastern Alberta that is important wildlife habitat, stores millions of tonnes of carbon, and is of cultural importance to local Indigenous communities. Alberta Wilderness Association has been working to protect McClelland since the early 1990s, but a 2002 decision from Alberta’s Energy and Utilities Board has given Suncor permission to mine half the wetland. The expansion of Suncor’s Fort Hills oil sands mine poses a significant risk of irreversible damage to McClelland unless it can be stopped. Alberta Wilderness Association reviewed Suncor’s plans and found numerous flaws which seem likely to contradict its approval conditions, but despite those flaws, the Alberta Energy Regulator has decided to ignore the evidence and to not reconsider its approval for the mine expansion.
