“Rare Plant Species in Southern Alberta: Sticky Purple Geranium and Green Milkweed”

Hosted by: Tory Blanchard, masters student in Ecology from the University of Calgary.

Tory has been focusing on how rare species interact with their neighbourhoods by examining plant community composition and pollinator interactions in two rare southern Alberta species: Asclepias viridiflora (Green Comet Milkweed) and Geranium viscosissimum (Sticky Purple Geranium). The study will involve collaboration with members of the Kainai First Nation and will use data from community science platforms such as iNaturalist to answer the research questions.

“Using Willows in Riparian Restoration “

Hosted by: Kate Pare, Senior Project Manager for Leaf Ninjas Inc.

Kate will talk about the ins and outs of using willows in riparian restoration and how willows could be of use in the urban landscape. These amazing plants have adapted to root from broken branches and survive underwater for months – characteristics that can be co-opted for use in restoration projects.
